18 The design of All My Sons, therefore, is the confrontation of a man with all of the consequences of his actions. It proceeds in two phases. The play is not, like Oedipus, the uhcovering of an unknown sin so horrible in its author's eyes that he blinds himself; nor is it, like Hamlet, the attempt to unmask a criminal anxious to keep his guilt secret. The simple exposing of his unashamed involvement does not bring Keller any new insight into himself or his actions. When Chris confronts him with his deed, Keller continues to excuse himself.
